State House Equality Day - 2011
Indiana Equality will be providing a crash course in techniques for you to successfully communicate with and educate your State legislators. There will also be a lunch panel of legislators to discuss legislation and answer your questions.
Immediately following the lobby training you will have an opportunity to meet with your State representative or senator and discuss your concerns about important issues pending before the Indiana General Assembly.
Indiana needs your help to influence these important issues in the 2011 Indiana General Assembly:
• The Marriage Discrimination Amendment (HJR 6, SJR 13): As expected the Indiana’s Marriage Discrimination Amendment has been filed in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The amendment would outlaw same-gender marriage as has already been done in Indiana by the passage of the 1997 Defense of Marriage Act. The Amendment makes yet another appearance in the General Assembly, with an increasing probability of passage.
• Bias crimes (HB 1332): The bill would provide for sentencing enhancements for those convicted of violent bigotry against Hoosiers based upon their color, creed, disability, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex.
• Bullying prevention (SB 538, HB 1567): These proposals strengthen existing law, requiring the dissemination of effective models of bullying prevention plans, incentives to school corporations to encourage student participation in extracurricular activities designed to prevent bullying, state auditing of compliance with bullying prevention, intervention, and reporting requirements, and requiring a school corporation's discipline and safety plan to address bullying prevention and response.
• Suicide prevention training for school personnel (SB 4, HB 1019): These proposals require the division of mental health and addiction, with input and guidance from the department of education, to develop programs for teacher training on the prevention of child suicide and the recognition of signs that a student may be considering suicide.
