ERW is delighted to pass on this message from Catholics for Marriage Equality Washington State (CFMEWA) below. The Catholic laity has long been an important part of the LGBT civil rights movement. Catholic elected leaders compelled by their understanding of their faith have championed LGBT civil rights legislation. We join in urging our Catholic supporters to contact their pastors and parish leadership and encourage them to prohibit signature gathering for Referendum 74 at church.

Remember —whether you are a member of the LGBT community or a straight ally— to share your personal story about why marriage equality matters to you, and people that you love, when you talk to your pastor. Ask other friends and family to engage in these conversations as well.  We are pleased to hear that already several pastors, after careful reflection, have let their congregations know signature gathering will not be permitted. And remember, if Referendum 74 does qualify for the ballot, which appears almost certain, we will need to work together to Approve Referendum 74 to retain Washington State's marriage equality law!

A message from Catholics for Marriage Equality Washington State (CFMEWA)
Dear sisters and brothers in our Washington State Catholic community,
This weekend our state’s bishops are asking all parishes to help gather signatures to put Referendum 74 on the ballot.  They want to stop the enactment of the new law that enables all committed couples to marry in Washington State.  We disagree with this action and we are asking our pastors not to circulate these petitions.
We have formed Catholics for Marriage Equality Washington State (CFMEWA) to share our viewpoint.  Our goal is to support freedom and fairness for all marriages and families in our community.
We uphold the State of Washington’s right to grant equality to all committed couples living in our state with the opportunity for a civil marriage in the eyes of the law.
If you agree, we ask that you contact your pastor and parish leadership and ask them to refuse to circulate the petition as well.  Over the next few months, there will be many opportunities for reflection, prayer and action.  We hope that you will join us in this important work by talking with your pastor and adding your name and email address to our list of Catholics for Marriage Equality in Washington State. Email us at CFMEWA@gmail.com
Let us know what happened in your parish.
