Dear Supporter,
On Washington’s House of Representatives made history by passing a bill that will legalize same-sex marriage for Washington families. We’ve been telling our personal stories about why marriage matters to us for years, and now both houses of the legislature have passed the bill after an intensive lobbying effort by the Washington United for Marriage coalition, sending it to Governor Gregoire for her signature.
The work is not over, and we may need work together in coalition to defend this bill by campaigning to approve a referendum if our opponents collect enough signatures. But, still we've passed a major landmark on the road to full dignity and equality for LGBT people in Washington, and the threat of referendum doesn't diminish the hard work our legislators have done to pass this bill this year.
Please take an opportunity to thank your representatives for passing the civil marriage bill yesterday.
Together we’ve collected over 20,000 postcards for our legislators, and the Washington United Campaign delivered to them at the peak of the coalition's lobbying efforts. Over the years we've called over 5,000 supporters to Olympia to lobby. Your response to our action alerts led to legislators receiving thousands of emails and phone calls from their constituents--over a quarter of a million consitituent contacts. Your participation in our social media activities and your letters-to-the-editors have kept the importance of marriage for same-sex families in the public’s awareness. You’ve provided the grassroots support for our professional and citizen lobbyists, and you made your voices heard.
Our legislators listened. Please take a moment to use our online tool to thank the representatives who voted in favor of this bill. Thank them for listening and making equality for LGBT Washingtonians a priority.
