Support the City Manager! Approve the Budget With DP Benefits

San Antonio City Manager Sheryl Sculley has included provision for domestic partner (DP) benefits in the City of San Antonio's operating budget. There really should be no controversy here. Unfortunately, there has been vocal opposition to the City Manager's proposal.  The San Antonio City Council will vote on the budget, and the provision for domestic partner benefits, this Thursday, September 15th.

APPROVE THE BUDGET WITH PROVISION FOR DP BENEFITS

FACT:  In 2011, competitive employee benefit plans routinely include DP benefits as a means of treating all employees equally and fairly. Why? Currently, 35.8% of the population of the United States resides in states that provide for domestic partnerships, civil unions, or marriage for gay and lesbian couples (1). In states without these provisions, employers provide DP benefits as a means to treat employees with parity.

FACT:  Competitive employee benefit plans help employers recruit and retain talent; the plans promote employee satisfaction and retention.

FACT: San-Antonio-based employers whose employee benefits plans include provision for domestic partners include:

AT&T

      Trinity University

Rackspace and Valero

FACT: National employers operating in San Antonio whose employee benefit plans include provision for domestic partners include: Clear Channel Communications, American Airlines, DELL, Radio Shack, Southwest Airlines, Whole Foods Market, Bank of America, Capital One, JPMorgan Chase, Hearst Corp. (owner of San Antonio Express-News), IBM, Delta Airlines, United Continental Holdings, Neiman Marcus, JCPenney, and many others.

FACT:  Competitive employee benefit plans help strengthen employees and their families. Data from the American Community Survey, which is administered by the U.S. Census Bureau, shows that San Antonio leads the country in gay parenting, with 34% of same-sex couples raising children.

FACT: Mainline faith communities of many religious traditions support the provision of DP employee benefits as a component of unconditional love and ministering to people without prejudice. Unfortunately, there are some people who would fail to see the forest of humanity for the trees of homophobia.  We must never allow fear to prevent us from doing what is right and just.
